A new controversy is brewing over the government’s decision to allocate a plot of land on Ile Perserverance for the construction of a cricket pitch.
Cricket is not Seychelles’ national sport and is mostly played by the Indian expatriate community and a handful of Seychellois, so why such investment?
Land in Seychelles is scared yet the government has taken it upon itself to allocate a plot of reclaimed land being paid for by Seychellois taxpayers that will end up being used mostly by foreigners who play cricket.
But that decision dates back nine years ago.
In January 2010, during the visit of the African Cricket Association (ACA) Chief Executive Cassim Suliman’s to Seychelles, then Community Development, Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Vincent Meriton promised to look for available terrain and present a case to the Ministry of National Development for approval because ‘the sport needs a separate ground.’
